MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat is a fully fledged continuation of a tactical action game in which we can sit inside a mecha of several dozen tons to perform combat missions commissioned by our clan. The first installment of the game saw the light of day relatively long time ago, because in 1989, thanks to Activision, it was converted to SNES console. The same publisher is also responsible for the second part of the series.
The idea of the game is based on Robert Thurston's novel I Am Jade Falcon, and the action takes place in 3057. We get into the middle of a murderous clan rivalry, whose main actors are powerful BattleMechy, reaching speeds of up to 180 km/h and equipped with a whole arsenal of various means of extermination. In the game we have a chance to become a warrior of one of the two hostile clans: Jade Falcon Clan and Wolf Clan, on which the story focuses. Each of them adheres to different rules and has slightly different types of mosses and types of weaponry available.
Contrary to the original, in MechWarrior 2 we do not participate in a dynamic campaign filled with a number of tenant tasks. We can take part in 32 further missions (16 for each side) with increasing difficulty. Tasks consist, among other things, in liquidation of the opponent's mosses or destruction of his combat infrastructure. We have at our disposal a dozen or so types of combat robots, although we can also try to create a "dream machine", affecting every tiniest element of the construction. The authors have provided a number of options to make it easier for the novice warriors to fight, e.g. by including immortality. For fans of multiplayer games there is an option to play via the Internet (and in later versions of the game also a local network), in which up to 8 players can take part at the same time.
Compared to the original, which was released in the era of 8086 processors and EGA graphics cards, MechWarrior 2 represents a huge leap forward in technology. The game offers excellent graphics and smooth animation in resolutions up to 1024x768, although you need DX4 or even Pentium class hardware to be fully lucky. A few years after the premiere, the game was released again, which moved the game to the Windows 95 environment and enriched it with, among others, support for graphics accelerators.
