PC

Mary Skelter 2 is an dungeon crawler RPG. Game was developed by Idea Factory studio, the authors of the first part released in 2017, as well as the series Code: Realize, Agarest and Hyperdimension Neptunia.

In addition to new content, the game also includes a remake of the previous part, Mary Skelter: Nightmares, offering many improvements in terms of graphics and gameplay.

Plot

This is not a classic sequel. Game tells the story of an alternative version of the world known from the original, and the authors recommend that those who are just beginning their adventure with the series first go through Mary Skelter 2, and only then start with Mary Skelter: Nightmares.

The action takes place in a strange living structure known as the Jail, which feeds on the people imprisoned in it. The game tells the story of a female warrior named Otsuu and her partner Little Mermaid. During one of their adventures, they rescue a young girl named Alice and a boy named Jack. On their way back to the base, however, Alice goes mad and starts attacking the rest of the group. During the fight, the team is knocked down into a deep chasm, ending up in the depths of the Prison. The heroes will have to fight their way back home.

Game mechanics

In terms of game mechanics, Mary Skelter 2 develops ideas from the first part of the series. So the game is a classic dungeon crawler. We observe the world from a first-person perspective, the movement is grid-based, and the player can turn only 90 degrees to the right or left side.

We explore the dungeons of the Prison, collect stuff, solve puzzles and most of all fight with hordes of monsters using turn-based battle system. Battles are also observed from a first-person perspective. During them there is no possibility to change the position of the character on the map, so we deal only with the activation of character's skills, using items and pointing the targets.

Wounding enemies allows you to fill up the blood bar for some of the team members who belong to the so-called Blood Maidens. When it is filled we can activate special forms, which greatly increase the attack power. However, this should be done carefully, because using this option can cause falling into a rage, which causes the character to attack the rest of the team.

As befits an RPG, a key part of the game is the development of character skills. Many of them are used not only in battles, but also during the exploration of dungeons and solving puzzles.

New in comparison to the previous part is the fact that Jack is transformed into Nightmare, a type of demon which we fought in the first installment of the series. However, he retains his senses and thanks to that we gain access to a completely new set of skills, different from those used by the Blood Maidens.

Game modes

Mary Skelter 2 offers only single player mode.

Technical aspects

The game features simple but pleasing to the eye graphics in a colorful style typical for Japanese cartoons. Environments and enemies are made in full 3D. However, the characters and NPCs we see in dialogue and intermission scenes are 2D.
