The sixth part of the series of sports games accompanying the Olympic Games, in which the characters representing the Super Mario and Sonic brands compete for gold medals in various disciplines. Among the latter in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is the debut of karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing, which first appeared at the Olympics in 2020.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is SEGA's sixth installment in the series of sports games started in 2007 to accompany the Olympic Games. As the name suggests, the game is a crossover of the Super Mario and Sonic brands.
Mechanics
In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 players take part in sports competitions by assuming the roles of characters from Nintendo and SEGA. The former include the Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Bowser, while the latter, apart from Sonic, include Miles "Tails" Prower, Dr. Eggman, and Knuckles the Echidna. Apart from classic Olympic disciplines such as swimming, gymnastics, and boxing, players can also prove themelves in karate, skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing, which debuted at the Olympic Games in 2020.
Game modes
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 allows one to play alone or in multiplayer mode; locally up to four players can fight for victory, and online up to eight players.
