Freeborn Description
Luckless Seven is an original combination of old-school, isometric RPG, adventure game and card game. The title is the debut project of the independent studio Deckpoint, co-founded by Jesse Kooner, who previously dealt mainly with utility applications (Maya, Blender, Photoshop, GIMP), and is mostly known to the gaming community as the creator of skins for the iconic Counter-Strike. The development of the game was financed in large part thanks to funds collected on Kickstarter.
Story
Luckless Seven takes place in a not too distant future, and the protagonist of the game is a young man named Mark, who, bored with his everyday work, devotes his free time to his only real passion, which is the gambling card game called Ekosi. Together with a group of school friends, Mark travels across subsequent locations in the fictional state of Arithia, participating in successive Ekosi tournaments and slowly climbing the player ranks, which culminates in participation in a prestigious, national tournament.
Mechanics
The core of Luckless Seven are the subsequent Ekosi matches. It is an original variation of the classic BlackJack with the option to modify the results with our own cards, and its mechanics was inspired by a game called Pazaak, which is one of the additional elements of BioWare's iconic 2003 RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
However, the game does not focus only on playing cards, because the whole thing is skillfully sewed into in classic RPG, in which special emphasis is placed on the plot and character progression. During the game, we travel through different locations, talk to numerous NPCs and take on a number of different side tasks, while an extremely important element is the interaction with other members of our party and making a number of decisions influencing their fate. And let's not forget about the vast full-party character progression system (not only Mark, but also the whole team), thanks to which, as the game progresses, we will gain new skills and access to more extensive dialogue options.
Technical aspects
Luckless Seven is powered by the popular Unity engine and features a bit old-school, but pleasant and quite detailed graphics, shown in isometric view. The game is accompanied by a professional soundtrack, for which Brandon Ledbetter is responsible, hiding under the original pseudonym NPC #23.
