Liberte is a hack'n'slash with card game and roguelike elements. It was developed by the independent studio Superstatic and published by Anshar Publishing. The developers were inspired by real events and people prominent during the French Revolution, as well as works delving into body horror, like those of David Cronenberg.
Plot
Liberte takes place in an alternate version of 18th-century Paris during the French Revolution. The king is gone, the crown is missing, and the city has been ravaged by the mysterious Lady Bliss - an interdimensional creature who revealed herself during Prince Philip's coronation and contributed to the start of a bloody civil war. The main protagonist is a man named Rene. He was appointed by Lady Bliss to find the next ruler among the representatives of the four factions fighting for influence in the city. Progressing through the game lets us learn more about the game's world, Lady Bliss, as well as about Rene himself, and why did she choose him to carry out her hidden agenda.
Mechanics
The gameplay of Liberte is shown from the top-down perspective. Throughout the game the player traverses the city, completes quests, makes alliances and gets entangled in various political intrigues. In addition to the nooks and crannies of Paris, we can also visit Bliss, the dimension Lady Bliss comes from. Although you can play through the entire game as Rene, you also unlock the ability to transform into other characters - Master Hunter Victor, Tribal Warrior Flea or Revolt Leader Ana. Each of them have different abilities, primarily useful in combat.
The player often comes across enemies to make use of their skills. Combat is dynamic, letting Rene fight with the use of melee weapons (like swords, axes and... guitars) and firearms. The player can also use a number of skills and perks represented by cards; progressing lets us expand our deck, unlocking new skills and letting us face greater challenges.
Game modes
Liberte can be played in singleplayer or in local co-op.
Technical aspects
The visuals of Liberte are very colorful. The architecture of Paris and the areas visited in Bliss are especially appealing.
