Layton Brothers Mystery Room, released on AND and iOS, is a detective adventure game. It was developed by the Japanese studio Level-5. The production is available in a free-to-play model. The free version is a kind of demo with a few cases. We can get more cases by purchasing the microtransactions.
Plot
Layton Brothers Mystery Room focuses on the adventures of Inspector Alfendie Layton and his new assistant, a young detective named Lucy Baker. The duo is based in London's Scotland Yard and deals only with the strangest cases. The script was written with a great sense of humor, so despite the often macabre subject matter, the plot can genuinely entertain. During the game, we have to solve the mystery of the death of a strangled woman whose body was found on the hotel balcony, with one hand inside a sandwich. Another time, we have to discover which of the two suspects murdered a man in his apartment, which is not easy, because no one can find the murder weapon.
Mechanics
Layton Brothers Mystery Room is a traditional adventure game so the majority of the gameplay focuses on exploring locations, conducting conversations and solving puzzles. Each case is divided into three stages. First, we carefully search the place of the crime, looking for evidence. Then, with their help, we have to demonstrate the contradictions that are contained in the case file, which usually requires the hearing of witnesses. The final stage is a confrontation with the perpetrator. Each of them will try to avoid punishment and our task is to find logical fallacies in their argumentation.
