A twin-stick shooter, in which players assume the role of spaceship pilots. The gameplay is presented from the top-down perspective. The core of the gameplay lies in destroying encountered foes. However, to spice things up, the game features permadeath, and the visited locations are procedurally generated, thus, the players face different obstacles every time they play.

New Game Network: 40 / 100
Almost every good piece of design in Last Encounter is knocked down multiple pegs thanks to an oppressive grind. It successfully manages to invest you in the world and its systems, before quickly erecting barriers that direct away from the interesting features. Had the game been a bit more generous with its upgrades, or toned down the monotony, this could have been a solid roguelike.
Screen Rant: 3.5 / 5 by Scott Baird
Last Encounter is a fun and frantic roguelike that is now on the go.
Pure Nintendo: 4 / 10 by Rachel Poli
Last Encounter is punishing with difficult AI and controls. Be prepared to die a lot and invest a good chunk of time if you hope to master the game and make progress.
Last Encounter Description
Last Encounter is a twin-stick shooter spiced up with roguelike elements. The game was developed by an independent studio, Exordium Games, and was released on the PC, PS4, XONE, and the Nintendo Switch.
Plot
The story told in the Last Encounter plays a minor role in the gameplay. The game is set in the far future when space travel has become an everyday activity. When the fate of humanity hangs on a thread, a group of heroes embarks on a long and dangerous mission to face threats lurking in the depths of the cosmos, in order to save the mankind from extinction.
Mechanics
The game features a top-down perspective. Over the course of the game, we assume the role of a spaceship pilot who explores the outer rims of space and fights enemies. The players cross paths with cannon fodder enemies (often coming in great numbers, what makes the game similar to bullet hell shooters), and much stronger bosses. Fortunately, the player isn’t helpless – besides the base arsenal that the ship comes equipped with, it is also possible to use all sorts of cannons, which are constructed from the components that can be found on the way. Moreover, in time, players can unlock ship upgrades and completely new crafts that offer greater firepower.
Nonetheless, the player should stay on his toes, because of the inclusion of permadeath. After dying the only thing that can be done is to start over again (taking control of another cloned body of the protagonist), to spice thing up even more, the visited areas are procedurally generated, this means that every new game entails facing new obstacles.
Game mode
Last Encounter can be played either solo or in the company od two friends – up to a maximum of three players – in local co-op mode.
Technical aspects
Although simple, the two-dimensional graphics generated by the designated platforms in Last Encounter is a pleasure for the eyes due to the colorful presentation and a wide variety of visual effects accompanying the encounters. The diversity of environments is also quite enjoyable to look at.
