developer: Monster Jail Games publisher: Monster Jail Games
LaserCat is an award-winning game by Daniel McFairline, the only developer in Monster Jail Games studio. The title is inspired by classic 2D platformers from the 8-bit era (e.g. Jet Set Willy).
Plot
The plot in the game is not particularly complicated. The Laser Cat receives a message that his friend, Owl, has been kidnapped and imprisoned in the magical cosmic palace of the cruel sorcerer - the Frog. The villain is demanding 1 million pounds which should be delivered before the tea time. The character has no time to lose and moves on to the dangerous estate to free the friend.
Mechanics
The player's task is to safely lead the Laser Cat through 225 chambers of the Frog Palace and collect the keys needed to open the cell where the Owl is located. However, this is not easy because of the many obstacles, such as the lava, traps and opponents.
The gameplay focuses on jumping between platforms and avoiding danger. An interesting way of making the gameplay more interesting are questions (so-called trivia), which require from the player a great knowledge about curiosities from various fields (e.g. "what is the most dangerous animal in Africa?" or "what was the name of the Greek god of war?").
Technical aspects
LaserCat is distinguished by its minimalist visuals. Its 2D graphics resemble productions from the 8-bit era. The whole aesthetic experience is complemented by a soundtrack with midi music.
