Kvark is a retro first-person shooter set in an underground mining complex in fictional 1980s Czechoslovakia. The game was developed by Latest Past studio in collaboration with Perun Creative, for which this is the second title after Hobo: Tough Life.
Plot
The titular Kvark is a complex where we end up in response to a job advertisement. We are responsible for round-the-clock security of the facility.
Despite the employer's assurances about high security standards, the situation on site is terrible. The whole thing is neglected and gives the impression that it is about to fall apart before our eyes.
Additionally, at every step, irradiated enemies are waiting for us, wanting to annihilate us.
Gameplay
Kvark is played from a first-person perspective. We traverse the dark rooms and corridors of the complex, equipped only with what we find on our way.
We have a wide range of weapons at our disposal, from heavy industrial wrenches, through rifles, to explosives in the form of grenades and missile launchers.
While exploring subsequent levels, we struggle not only with waves of enemies, but also with puzzles of various levels of difficulty. Thanks to the scattered notes, we delve into the plot and discover the secrets of this place.
Between fights, we have the opportunity to regenerate and collect items which increase our armor statistics. We replenish the health bar mainly thanks to classic first aid kits, but also sandwiches and vending machines with drinks.
Technical aspects
The game was created on Unreal Engine 5 and offers a graphic style reminiscent of classic FPS games from the 1990s. The presentation has been enriched with new technological innovations known from contemporary games in the form of rendering techniques and adaptive sound.
