Knights of Honor II: Sovereign is the kind of game that confuses me with its existence. It’s not for newcomers with its real-time world map on top of real time combat. Even slowed down to turtle speed, it’s still a lot for someone who’s never played a game like this to start with. Especially with the complete lack of a worthwhile tutorial to lead them through the game. And it’s definitely not for genre veterans, given they’ll have played ten games that do everything better than this one.
MKAU Gaming: 8 / 10 by Adam Brasher
Knights Of Honour 2: Sovereign is a game that takes patients and a strategic mind, a dash of luck would not go astray either. You will make bad decisions that could just about bring your whole kingdom crumbling to your feet, and if that happens just try again. Just beware however you will need time to play this, either a lot at once or in short intervals over a long time, this isn’t a quick skirmish and the games one this is a long term, put plans in motion and prepare for a long winter type of game. Yes, you can still just play for the fun of it, though with friends would make that easier and more enjoyable. For the hard-core strategist, this game will show you just how good you are and will make anyone who loves that sort of competitive aspect or challenge to their skill giddy with excitement.

As accessible as I’ve ever seen serious strategy gaming, Knights of Honor is still strategically interesting, gorgeous to look at, and still offers plenty of challenge. It hasn’t been compromised in any significant way for the sake of accessibility, and really, this is just a very good example of a publisher finding a genuine and worthy niche to occupy within a very mature and saturated genre.
The main pros of the game
- Blend of Gameplay Styles: Users appreciate the mix between the Total War series and Crusader Kings 3, providing a unique combination of real-time battles and light political strategy.
- Real-Time with Pause: The ability to pause the game while managing strategies is seen as a refreshing feature in the grand strategy genre.
- Variety of Buildings: There is a greater variety of buildings compared to similar games, allowing for more strategic options.
- Quality of Life Features: Users mention helpful features such as the ability to reorder buildings and units in the menu.
- No Additional Costs: The game does not have DLCs, microtransactions, or intrusive EULAs, which many players find appealing.
- Mod Support: The presence of a workshop for mods is a positive aspect, allowing players to customize their experience.
- Affordability: The game is considered reasonably priced, especially during discounts.
The main cons of the game
- Slow Start: Many players find the beginning of the game to be incredibly slow, leading to boredom as they wait for events to unfold.
- Combat Issues: The combat is described as lackluster and repetitive, with some players only enjoying siege battles. The AI is criticized for being too easy to defeat.
- Balancing Problems: Users express frustration over game balance, particularly regarding the management of newly conquered provinces, leading to rebellions and dissatisfaction.
- Diplomatic Mechanics: Diplomacy is seen as underwhelming, with diplomats often viewed as ineffective or useless.
- Unexplained Mechanics: Some mechanics are not well explained, causing confusion and frustration among players.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- Depth in Strategy: Some users feel that the game lacks depth compared to more complex strategy games like Europa Universalis IV, and they desire more intricate mechanics.
- Event Variety: There is a noted absence of historical events, which some players feel would enhance the gameplay experience.
- Language Support: A lack of support for additional languages, particularly Italian, is highlighted as a significant drawback by some users.
- More Provinces: Some players express a desire for more provinces to manage, suggesting that the current setup feels limited.
Summary
- Overall, "Knights of Honor II: Sovereign" is seen as a nostalgic return to a classic formula that appeals to fans of the genre, but it has areas that need improvement, particularly in balancing and depth.
