Killer Instinct Classic is a reissue of Rare's classic fighting game, which debuted in 1994 on arcade game machines and has been ported to SNES and Game Boy consoles, among other platforms. The refreshed version of the game was prepared by the Canadian studio Code Mystics, which has collaborated on the re-editions of several other old hits such as Dragon's Lair, Metal Slug 3 or Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection. Killer Instinct Classic is available for free to all owners of the new version of Killer Instinct (Ultra and Ultimate).
Story
The story of Killer Instinct Classic revolves around the eponymous martial arts tournament, organized by the powerful Ultratech corporation. In addition to the world's most famous and powerful warriors, the genetic engineering company set out creatures created in its laboratories in order to test their combat utility.
Mechanics
Killer Instinct Classic does not seem to have any special features compared to other two-dimensional fighting games, such as Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter or Tekken. However, the game is distinguished by a few innovative solutions, which cannot be found in the productions of the competition. The first of these is the abandonment of the typical "best-of-three" rivalry model. In Killer Instinct the fight lasts only one round, but both enemies have two independent energy bars. The winner is the player who is the first to exhaust both of the opponent's bars. The second novelty of the game is the automatic combo system - to launch them it is not necessary to use the appropriate combination of keys, but it is enough to press one at the right moment of the fight. Like the Mortal Kombat series, the game also contains special techniques to finish off the opponent. In this case, they are divided into two types: No Mercy/Danger Move (a powerful combo reaching even several dozen strikes) and Humiliation (a move that enables us to ridicule our opponent and force them to dance for example).
Game modes
In addition to the typical vs AI duel mode, Killer Instinct Classic features the well-known arcade option for two players competing on one screen. In later updates to the game, a multiplayer online mode was also introduced.
Technical aspects
Killer Instinct Classic is a faithful adaptation of the original from 1994. The game does not feature completely refreshed visuals, and during the game we watch the image in 4:3 ratio, supplemented on both edges with the game logotype. However, the creators have implemented a number of graphic filters, thanks to which we can, for example, scale the screen to a standard 1080p. An interesting feature is the possibility to choose one of two versions of the game: 1.5D (the final edition of Killer Instinct), or the previous 1.4 (containing a few troublesome but beloved bugs). Also noteworthy is the use of a special joypad called Killer Instinct Arcade FightStick Tournament Edition 2, faithfully reflecting the experience of playing on classic arcade machines.
