Kick & Fennick available on PS4, WiiU and etc. is a colorful platform game, in which a player gets to control a little boy and his robot companion. The game, initially designed exclusively for mobile devices, has been developed by an independent two-man studio from the Netherlands – Jaywalkers Interactive. In order to release the game on home gaming systems, the Dutch studio cooperated with Abstraction Games, also known for converting such games as Pixel Piracy and A Boy and His Blob.
Plot
The main protagonist of the game is a little boy named Kick, who wakes up in a desolate futuristic city. As he rubs his eyes, he falls victim to an attack of a menacing guard but is saved by a flying robot – Fennick. Kick soon realizes that his savior does not have much time left, as his battery has been damaged. The main protagonist decides to return Fennick’s favor and find him a new power cell. Unfortunately, it can be found only in the Core Tower located in the center of the metropolis, and the road to it is not a bed of roses – both characters have to face many traps and other dangers. In his journey, Kick can use the enormous weapon he found upon waking up, not only to fight all the foes, but also to overcome the most difficult obstacles.
Mechanics
Kick & Fennick is a platform game in the true sense of the word. The game features 2.5D visuals, which means that both the locations and the character models have been created in 3D. Moreover, the developers introduced an interesting mechanic for moving over the obstacles and covering large gaps between platforms – the main protagonist uses his big gun, which he is barely able to carry throughout the entire journey. By using the gun’s recoil, Kick can cover large distances and reach high altitudes. Nonetheless, players have to exercise caution, as a badly aimed shot can end tragically. During the game, one gets to traverse all kinds of nooks and corners of the deserted metropolis divided into 40 levels.
Technical aspects
The visuals featured by the PS4, WiiU and etc. release of Kick & Fennick cannot match the best games of the genre, however, they don’t look bad. The developers implemented several cutscenes that build up the story and allow players to better acquaint themselves with both Kick and Fennick.
