Gmbroglio is the work of Michael Broughh, creator of such titles as 868-HACK, Corrypt, or Helix. The game draws in spades from a roguelike, RPG, and even board and card games, constituting an intriguing mix of their most interesting elements.
Mechanics
Imbroglio starts with the selection of one of eight heroes, which the player will lead to battle. Heros uses a variety of weapons as well as special skills and runes. The latter can be used to upgrade weapons, providing them with additional bonuses against enemies.
The game takes place on a two-dimensional board, which at the same time is a constantly changing labyrinth. The clashes, which are the lion's share of the game, take place in a turn-based system. One of the four types of enemies can stand in our way - they have been differentiated not only in appearance but also in the number of health, the damage inflicted and special abilities.
The most interesting element of this production, however, are references to card games. The player is unable to build their own universal set - the card is selected depending on the place on the tactical grid on which the hero is at a given moment. Killing a certain number of opponents with it results in unlocking the cards' additional effects. The key to success is, therefore, to develop certain tactics and use the opportunities available at a given level of the labyrinth.
Technical aspects
As mentioned earlier, a game in Imbroglio takes place on a two-dimensional board. Both elements of the environment, opponent models and the entire interface were drawn by hand. The whole thing looks neat and clean, although there are visual bells and whistles here. The sound layer is also modest, but it fits well into the atmosphere of the game.
