Plot
I Was a Teenage Exocolonist takes us on a journey to the first colony founded outside the Solar System. We arrive on the planet Vertumna in the skin of the titular young colonist (or colonist), whom we accompany through the various stages of his life. After completing the adventure with one character, we can start playing as another colonist, who will remember his previous life. The latter is important, since the future of the planet is at stake, and our actions and the decisions we make affect not only the life of our character, but also the fate of the entire globe. The story told in the game can end in 29 different ways.
Game mechanics
In I Was a Teenage Exocolonist we are primarily concerned with following the fate of our character, which we shape by making decisions over the following months. The life of our hero or heroine is in our hands from the very beginning; starting with the choice of school and interests, through our approach to life and the world, ending with relationships with other colonists and the search for our other half. It is only up to us whether we take on the role of a school primer working on new technologies, or decide to prove ourselves as an adventurer learning about the planet's flora and fauna and fighting giant beasts. A total of 25 professions are waiting to be tested here - from the ordinary ones, like salesman, to the more fancy ones, like scientist.
It doesn't stop there, as by making choices we expand the range of experiences. They are presented in the form of cards, and we can use the deck, which we compose as we progress, in moments requiring demonstration - whether we're talking about passing an important test or even escaping from a monster chasing us. In addition, as we progress, we develop character traits, among which we find courage, toughness, organization and empathy, among others.
