Highway Getaway is a racing game/endless runner hybrid developed jointly by Invictus Games and Vivid Games. We play as a race driver who is being chased by the police. The game takes place on the streets with heavy traffic. All race tracks are generated procedurally. All we have to do is to drive as far as possible and beat the records set by other players. Highway Getaway offers over two hundred diversified missions.
Highway Getaway is arcade game combining elements of racing games and endless runners. The title uses a free model with microtransactions and was developed by the Polish studio Vivid Games, the devs of Ski Jumping Pro, Godfire: Rise of Prometheus and the Real Boxing series. The Hungarian team at Invictus Games helped in the work.
Mechanics
In the game we play the role of a car driver trying to escape the police chasing him. His task is not an easy one, because the chase takes place on streets with a lot of traffic, so one mistake is enough to cause a crash. As befits an endless runner game, routes are generated randomly and never end. All the fun comes down to trying to cover as long a distance as possible and beating scores set by ourselves or the rest of the community.
Highway Getaway is played in the vertical orientation, and the events are observed from a camera located behind the trunk of the car. The vehicle automatically drives forward and we use gestures to change the track to avoid a collision or to collect a valuable object, for example. The devs offered two controls systems, one based on touching the right places on the screen and the other on drawing short lines. Both are designed so that we can play with one hand.
During the escape, the driver gradually increases his level of infamy. High speeds and dangerous maneuvers make us an increasing priority for the police, but at the same time we are rewarded with money paid by a TV station making a chase show.
We can invest the money in unlocking new cars and various improvements. In total, there are ten cars to acquire and their appearance can be modified to a large extent. In addition to breaking records, the players can also carry out profitable missions, of which there are more than 200. They are based on performing specific tasks while driving.
Technical aspects
The strength of Highway Getaway is the quality of execution. The devs offer attractive three-dimensional visuals, and the fun is diversified by a large variety of locations, including cities, canyons and industrial areas.
