An action horror game for two players. It is a variation on a game of hide and seek. Hide and Shriek was developed by FunCom, the creators of games like The Longest Journey, The Secret World and Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures. The story background of the title tells about the rivalry between two schools of magic. During the Halloween night the adepts of both schools decide to scare their rivals.

Plot

Hide and Shriek takes place during the Halloween. The pupils of High Springs high school and the Innsmouth academy are competing against each other. Both schools are training adepts of arcane arts who want to celebrate the ghost day in an unusual way – once the night falls, they are sneaking into the rival facility, trying to scare their opponents.

Mechanics

The action in Hide and Shriek for PC is presented by using a first-person perspective. The gameplay focuses on rivalry between two players – during 10-minute games each of them is tasked with scarring his opponent or obtaining more points. What makes things harder – or easier, depending on player’s situation – is the fact that both players are invisible. One of the main focuses, inspired by horrors, is looking for signs of rival’s presence. Among these, there might be levitating objects or door that suddenly open. The player must use various tricks, set traps and use the black magic to win – the developers created more than 30 varied spells among which there’s demon summoning, blinding the opponent and even occult rituals. Masks prove to be useful as well – among them there is a zombie head, some skulls and imitations of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

Technical aspects

Hide and Shriek offers high quality graphics. The environment is polished, character models are filled with details and the spells cast by the players are accompanied by various effects. The title also has a decent soundtrack which consists not only of atmospheric music but of screams and noises from the afterlife as well.
