Heathen: The Sons of the Law

Heathen is a low-profile project of an independent team known as Frog Factory that bases on The Island of Dr. Moreau, a science-fiction novel by H.G. Wells. Interestingly enough, Heathen is a multiplayer-only title that offers a cooperative first person shooter/role playing experience.

Plot

The action of Heathen takes place on a lone island inhabited by strange human-animal hybrids created by Dr. Moreau – a scientist who’s engaged in vivisection and genetic experiments. After the death of its benefactor, the forgotten island has been rediscovered and taken over by two individuals – Peary, a scientist and a biologist, and Scott, a rich entrepreneur. The duo continues the research, seeing the beast folk as a potential source of cheap labor. Twenty years later, the island has become a powerful empire, with hundreds of hybrids in top physical condition. Unfortunately, the realm has succumbed to the inevitable – humans lost control over the monsters, and are forced to retreat to a small outpost in the northern part of the island.

Mechanics

Heathen is a multiplayer-only experience for small teams from four up to five players that assume the role of Beast Folk, exploring the Island, and taking over new territories according to the Moreau’s Law. The world contains both scripted quests, as well as special instances. Moreover, the authors introduced numerous RPG systems, including character creation, experience system, or equipment management, with PvP modes and social features unlocked further into the game.

Technical Aspects

The authors have prepared fitting, visceral graphics that correspond to the themes found in game. The game is powered by CryEngine 3, a popular game engine developed by Crytek.
