Hearthstone: Descent of Dragons is another expansion for the free card game from Blizzard Entertainment. The expansion was revealed at BlizzCon 2019 as the culmination of the Year of the Dragon story campaign, which began in Rise of Shadows and continued in Saviors of Uldum.
Plot
Descent of Dragons is the culmination of the story of the League of E.V.I.L., a group of villains known from previous Hearthstone expansions: Rafaam, Togwaggle, Hagatha and Boom. After the battle with The League of Explorers in Uldum, both groups head for the ice continent of Northrend, where Galakrond, an ancient proto-dragon defeated by the Dragon Aspects at the dawn of history, awakend from his slumber. That's where the final battle between the heroes and villains will take place.
Mechanics
According to tradition, Hearthstone: Descent of Dragons introduces 135 new cards, including Galakrond, a character available for five classes of heroes. Each of them received a different version of the dragon, but all of them can strengthen it by playing cards with the new keyword - Invoke. Another novelty are the Side Quests. The rewards for completing them are not as big as those for Quests from Journey to Un'Goro and Saviors of Uldum, but they are also much easier. As a result, Side Quests do not require the creation of a special deck for the benefit of summoning a minion.
Game modes
Hearthstone: Descent of Dragons introduces a new game mode - Battlegrounds. It offers game gameplay, similat to auto battlers like Teamfight Tactics and Dota Underlords. In it, eight players fight as one of 24 heroes with unique special powers, trying to create an invincible army to stand as the only winner on the battlefield. However, we do not create our own deck here. Instead, we recruit supporters in Bob's Inn, similar to Adventures from previous additions, but with significant changes: we get a certain amount of cards, from which we choose a few that we want to use in the fight. We choose our minions by paying coins for them, but we can also use them to draw a new set of cards, get rid of unnecessary copies or improve the inn to offer more powerful minions.
Technical aspects
Descent of Dragons does not change anything in the audio-visual layer of the game, except for the introduction of new illustrations and effects when playing cards introduced in the add-on.
