Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator- for PC, PS4 and PS3 is a classic, Japanese fighting game from the legendary Guilty Gear series started in 1998. The game is co-developed by Arc System Works from Japan and Daisuke Ishiwatari whom apart from directing the game has also composed the soundtrack, which became a tradition. Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator- is an extended edition of Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, which debuted on consoles in 2014. This edition includes numerous improvements implemented during tests in arcade saloons, which change the game’s balance and eliminate some errors reported by fans. Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator- introduces new characters and chapters to the single player campaign.

Plot

The plot continues the story in the previous instalments of the game. The action takes place in the distant future in 2187. There are a couple chapters concentrating on both new and old characters. Cut-scenes presented between battles are created in a fashion of visual novel games.

Mechanics

Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator- published on PC, PS4 and PS3 follows the classic mechanics of its predecessors. The game features new technology and engine, but just like in Street Fighter IV, you fight on 2-dimensional levels with 3-dimensional, dynamic backgrounds. The rules are simple and the extensive tutorial helps the player to learn all the terms connected with fighting games and particular mechanics of the title. In contrast to Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, the production features more than 20 characters, with Johnny Sfondi, Jack-O, Jam Kuradoberi, and beloved-by-fans Dizzy among them. Each of them possesses a range of powerful moves and special attacks. It takes loads of exercise, remembering, and quick reaction to master the most effective combos, as almost each move can be stopped and countered by the opponent.

Game modes

Apart from the single player campaign and single battles, players can take part in a series of combats in the arcade mode and also browse through graphics, video clips and music acquired during gameplay. Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator- offers a number of multiplayer modes. Apart from regular sparring with players around the world, you can also fight for the highest positions in the multiplayer rankings.

Technical aspects

Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator- supports graphics in 1080p and 60 frames per second. The title utilises 3D backgrounds and characters models, which replace 2D sprites from previous instalments. By using the power of Unreal Engine, the creators went to great lengths to make the game’s style and atmosphere as similar to its predecessors as possible. Due to cel-shading, the characters are very much resembling their 2-dimensional counterparts. This illusion shatters when the camera – usually fixed – changes its position and shows the action from a different angle.
