Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar Description
Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar for PC is a turn-based RPG developed by Cleve Blakenmore – an independent developer. The action of the game is set in a dark fantasy world somewhat resembling the classic RPGs from the turn of the 1980s and 1990 such as Eye of the Beholder and Wizardry 6: Bane of the Cosmic Forge.
Plot
Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar takes players on a journey to a fantasy world of Hyperborea, in which, at the beginning of all existence, a destructive war had broken out nearly destroying the entire continent. The war has been started by the forces of ancient evil, about which a player learns more during the later stages of the game. In order to stop this war, the protector of Hyperborea called White Owl asks the goddess of the Moon to give him the Metronome Mysterium – a lunar clock that maintains the balance between the chaos and order. When the war is over, he buries the clock and describes its whereabouts on nine boards.
Thousands of years later, the clock begins to slow down resulting in the return of the hostility between the factions inhabiting the world – this might lead to another grand war. Because of this, a player is tasked with finding the boards with the clues leading to the location where the Metronome Mysterium was buried, as the White Owl himself has forgotten where did he put the device maintaining the balance between the good and evil.
Mechanics
Upon starting his adventure, a player has to create their own character by choosing from among 14 races, 15 professions, and 50 skills – it affects where and in what circumstances one begins his journey. During the game, a player has to face various enemies including thieves, assassins, spies, demons, bounty hunters, giant spiders, demigods, and mythical creatures. Each opponent is trying to beat the main protagonist to the location where the Metronome Mysterium has been buried.
Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar delivers turn-based combat. A player can fall victim to over 30 conditions, including confusion, disease, and lycanthropy. The creator ensures that the game can provide over 600 hours of gameplay during a single playthrough – within this time, a player can acquire over 1000 randomly generated items, explore over 240 diverse locations, and cast 144 contextual spells. The story finale depends on player’s choices.
Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar for PC offers many challenges featuring logical puzzles, side quests, and rich, interactive dungeons. Moreover, one is bound to encounter multiple minigames, including those in which a player has to picklock doors on chests.
Technical aspects
Players can well immerse into this grim fantasy world thanks to hand-drawn 2D graphics. Interestingly enough, one can adjust the game to their preferences by modifying the game’s interface. Also available are such facilitations as e.g. auto-healing. On their journey, players are accompanied by the atmospheric MIDI soundtrack as well as 8-bit sound effects.
