Gran Turismo is the first installment of the iconic racing games series. The title was released in 1997 in Japan and in 1998 in other markets. At the time of its launch, it was the most advanced racing simulator available on Sony's console. The title was developed by Polys Entertainment, which in 1998 changed its name to Polyphony Digital. This is the name under which it still functions today.

Mechanics

Gran Turismo is a racing game emphasizing realistic representation of car physics. The title contains 140 vehicles, whose parameters can be modified by the player between races. When browsing the available vehicles, we can find brands such as Dodge, Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Subaru. The main aim of the game is to win races on eleven tracks (and their mirror reflections).

Game modes

Polys Entertainment's game offers two main gameplay modes - Arcade Mode and Gran Turismo Mode. In the first one, the player is free to choose the track and car, and wins unlock new locations and vehicles.

In Gran Turismo Mode, the driver is rewarded with credits for which they can buy new cars and tuning parts. In order to gain access to the most prestigious competitions, we first need to develop licenses by completing special challenges.

Technical aspects

Gran Turismo features high-quality 3D visuals that, according to the devs, take advantage of approximately 75% of the PlayStation's capabilities. The fun is enhanced by a licensed soundtrack containing songs from such artists as Cubanate, Manic Street Preachers and Garbage.
