Eurogamer: by Martin Robinson
Mario Golf and Earthbound combine for one of the most delightful games you'll find on Nintendo's Switch.
GamesBeat: 90 / 100 by Anthony John Agnello
Golf Story is confident, smooth, and its lighter than light approach to everything from art to humor to play is perfectly matched with the Switch's play anytime, anywhere form factor. Forget the agony and ecstasy of real golf. This is a really good time.
Nintendo Life: 9 / 10 by Mitch Vogel
All told, Golf Story is a surprisingly gripping game, hooking you with fantastic gameplay, loads of content, and a well-written script. This is one that'll have you coming back for many hours in the story mode alone, and the multiplayer does a good job of expanding on this with even more replayability. We would highly recommend Golf Story to anyone looking for something a little different. There's a whole lot to love here, and if you're a fan of RPGs or golf games, this is a must buy.
Golf Story Description
The SWITCH release of Golf Story is a game developed by a small independent studio called Sidebar Games. The game is an interesting combination of several video game genres created to deliver the titular golf experience.
Plot
In the game, one gets to assume the role of a golf player, who travels the world in search for new challenges and opponents. Golf Story, however, is not a typical sports game, in which one participates in consecutive matches – instead, a player gets to embark on an adventure, talk to encountered NPCs, and complete numerous tasks.
Mechanics
In terms of the mechanics, the game is a combination of games from the Mario Golf series as well as Stardew Valley. Developers prepared eight diverse areas with their own cities, NPCs, and golf courses. Player’s main objective is to face the golf masters, however, one has to prepare for these matches by performing secondary tasks. In the visited metropolises, one can, e.g. solve a puzzle, complete an assignment that boosts one’s skills, and purchase better pieces of gear. Moreover, during the game a player can complete various assignments that are not related to golf – among others, one can participate in a race, mow the lawn, fly a drone, and many others.
The matches exhibit an arcade nature; nonetheless, they are based on the authentic golf rules. A player can complete holes on diverse golf courses – from the standard grass ones to the special water locations with drifting rafts and… crocodiles.
Technical aspects
In terms of its visuals, the SWITCH release of Golf Story resembles the classic jRPG games and the more modern independent titles, such as the aforementioned Stardew Valley.
