Romancing SaGa 2 boasts an expansive 3D world to explore, gorgeous character models and equipment, and compelling enemy designs. You can even choose between the original and a remastered orchestral score full of earworms from the glory days of the '90s. A remake of a classic JRPG many Western fans have missed, even three decades later, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven's inventive mechanics make it a worthwhile experience.
NintendoWorldReport: 9.5 / 10 by Jordan Rudek
From the moment I played the demo at PAX West to when I rolled credits and immediately dove back in, I've been completely enamored with its nonlinear trappings and charming world-building. It's my sincere hope that the team that brought this remake to life will be given the reins to a Romancing SaGa 3 remake and then new SaGa titles moving forward, because they hit a grand slam with this one. There's no doubt on my end – cold or otherwise: Revenge is a dish best served with romance.
GamingTrend: 80 / 100 by John Farrell
Romancing Saga 2 - Revenge of the Seven is a brilliant culmination of many of my favorite aspects of JRPGs. While I have some complaints about technical issues and details about implementation, the quality of mechanics and exploration easily blow past them. Fans of the genre will not be disappointed with this sprawling narrative full of secrets and challenges.
The main pros of the game
- Unique Inheritance System: The game features a compelling inheritance mechanic where skills and abilities pass down through generations of emperors, adding depth and strategic planning to gameplay.
- Engaging Combat Mechanics: The turn-based combat system is praised for its challenge and strategic depth, with features like the glimmering system allowing characters to learn new skills mid-battle.
- Non-linear Exploration: Players enjoy the freedom to tackle quests in any order, leading to varied playthroughs and decisions that impact the game world.
- Quality of Life Improvements: The remake introduces several enhancements, such as clearer UI indicators for progression and quest markers, making the game more accessible to newcomers without losing its complexity.
- High Replayability: Different paths, character classes, and choices lead to unique experiences in each playthrough, encouraging multiple runs.
The main cons of the game
- Steep Learning Curve: Many players note that the game can be overwhelming for newcomers due to its complex systems and mechanics, requiring time to master.
- Difficulty Spikes: Some reviews mention abrupt difficulty spikes, particularly with certain bosses, which can be frustrating for players.
- Permadeath Mechanics: The Life Points (LP) system, where characters can permanently die, can be punishing and may deter some players.
- Sparse Narrative Depth: While the gameplay is praised, the story is often described as simple or lacking depth, with some characters feeling generic.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- More Detailed Storytelling: Some players feel that the narrative could benefit from deeper character development and more engaging storytelling elements.
- Improved Party Management: Users express a desire for better systems for managing party members and their skills, especially after time skips.
- Flexible Saving Options: The removal of the ability to save anywhere (now limited to save points) is seen as a regression from the original game.
- Greater Character Distinction: There are calls for more unique characteristics among party members, as many feel similar due to the class and skill inheritance system.
Summary
- Overall, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is celebrated for its innovative mechanics and engaging gameplay, though it faces criticism for its steep learning curve and narrative simplicity. The remake effectively modernizes the classic while retaining its core charm, making it a worthwhile experience for both newcomers and fans of the series.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Description
Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a comprehensive remake of a jRPG with strategy elements released in 1993, which also received a slightly refreshed version in 2016. The remake is the result of a collaboration between Square Enix, the company overseeing the brand, and Xeen studio.
Plot
Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven takes us to a fantasy universe, specifically to the Varennes Empire. The ruler and the citizens believed in the ancient legend of the Seven Heroes, who were to arrive one day to bring peace to the world. When the capital of the empire, Avalon, falls victim to a massive attack, it quickly turns out that Kzinssie, one of the legendary heroes, is behind it.
Given that Prince Victor, the heir to the throne, died during the invasion, Emperor Leon decides to use powerful magic and transfer his powers to his second son - Gerard. From now on, the task of taking revenge on the mythical "heroes" will rest on the shoulders of the young imperial heir, and later on his descendants.
How the events will unfold, as well as how the war between the Varennes Empire and the Seven Heroes will end, largely depends on our actions and the choices we make.
Gameplay
Unlike the original, in Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven we don't watch the action from a bird's eye view, but from behind the character's back (TPP). The game provides us with a vast world divided into a number of regions that we can freely traverse. While exploring them, we get to know their inhabitants, and also carry out various quests for them, helping them deal with the problems they are struggling with.
As we progress, we are joined by characters with different professions, preferred weapons and fighting styles. It is important to have allies, since we often have to reach for our weapons. Our character and their companions can fight using various types of swords, spears, axes or even maces, as well as use magic associated with various elements.
The battles take place in a turn-based mode, and their outcome is determined not only by skillful use of characters' abilities and strengths, but also by our tactical sense. We can position the team on the battlefield and choose its formation, as well as apply various status effects.
During battles, we charge a special indicator - overdrive - which, when filled, gives us the opportunity to use a powerful attack. In addition, the game implements the so-called Glimmers mechanic. The protagonist and his allies can randomly acquire specific skills , which is signaled by a characteristic flash above the character's head.
Strategic elements have also been implemented in the game. It allows us to manage the budget of the empire and expand the imperial castle, erecting various objects, such as a forge or an incantation laboratory, where we can stock up on new weapons and spells. As time goes by, we must designate the next successors to the throne, who will lead our army to fight against the forces of the Seven Heroes.
Difficulty levels
Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven offers three levels of difficulty. The Casual variant is intended for players with less experience in jRPGs, the Normal mode was created with people familiar with this genre in mind, while Hard (Classic) was designed for veterans of the original Romancing SaGa 2.
Graphics and music
Compared to the original, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven stands out thanks to thoroughly refreshed graphics. Pixel art sprites and two-dimensional backgrounds were replaced with three-dimensional character models maintained in a manga style. The remake also features detailed location designs.
Although a thoroughly refreshed soundtrack was created for the game, signed by Kenji Ito, we can also switch back to the original music at any time.
