GamingBolt: 3 / 10 by Ravi Sinha
Flashback 2 could have channelled the first game's spirit while presenting a new spin on the action. It fails spectacularly, lacking polish and nearly any redeeming qualities.
GosuNoob: 3 / 10 by Miodrag Kuzmanovic
Sadly, Flashback 2 is a disaster, or le désastre, as French would say. It’s actually pretty rare these days for a high-profile release to turn up this spectacularly bad. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong, making the game a poster child for faulty developmental and QA practices across the board. It’s so bad that it is somewhat impressive.
Metro GameCentral: 3 / 10
A depressingly awful sequel whose main faults are probably due to a lack of budget and development time, but that doesn't excuse it being considerably less entertaining than the 31-year-old original.
Flashback 2 Description
Flashback 2 is the second installment of the action platform game series, launched in 1992. It was developed by Microids Studio Lyon, in close cooperation with the team of the creator of the original - Paul Cuisset.
Plot
The action of Flashback 2 takes place after the events presented in the first part of the series. Ian, or a friend of the game's main character - Conrad B. Hart - was kidnapped. Suspecting that aliens hiding under the guise of humans called Morphs are behind his abduction, the protagonist sets off in pursuit of Ian. Thus begins another adventure for Conrad, who realizes that the Morphs have not been defeated and continue to threaten the security of the entire solar system...
Game mechanics
Flashback 2 is a side-scroller. The adventure takes us through a variety of locations - from the familiar Neo Washington and jungles from the original, to completely new places like Neo Tokyo and a space station full of secrets. We move between key locations by riding the so-called Jet Bike - a futuristic motorcycle. We then observe the action from third person perspective (TPP).
During the crossing Conrad has to be on guard, as the places he visits are swarming with enemies. The hero deals with enemies in a variety of ways. Although there's nothing stopping him from trying to get into an open fight, it's often a better idea to hide in the shadows and avoid adversaries or eliminate them by surprise. Nevertheless, from time to time we can also sit at the helm of a powerful mech, which sows a veritable havoc in the enemy ranks.
As we progress, we acquire new equipment and various upgrades to the equipment we already have. In addition to the pistol, Conrad's inventory includes grenades, shields and a camouflage device to help him stay hidden.
Technical aspects
Graphics in Flashback 2 is made in a characteristic, slightly dark style referring to the original. The animation of the main character is due to the work of a professional stuntman - Jamel Blissat.
