Swords & Soldiers II is the second game in the unusual strategy game series developed by Ronimo Games. Once again, the plot focuses on Redbeard and his gang of Vikings who venture on a dangerous journey. What makes Swords & Soldiers II stand out among other similar games are the mechanics. Gameplay mixes the elements from RTS', side-scrolling arcades, and tower defense games.
Continuation of an unusual strategy game, produced by an independent Dutch studio Ronimo Games - known especially from the popular game MOBA Awesomenauts. The first part of the game was released in 2009 on the Wii console, and a year later it was converted to PC and PlayStation 3. Sequel became an exclusive title for owners of the new generation of the Nintendo console.
The originality of Swords & Soldiers lies in the clever combination of classic side-scroll arcade with elements of RTS strategy and tower defence. The final effect is reminiscent of the early versions of the Worms series and is made with the right sense of humour. The game consists in a competition between two opponents, whose fortresses are located on the opposite edges of the board. Its aim is to conquer the enemy's castle before the same art succeeds. In order to do this, we need to develop our base and create more units, while taking care of the raw materials needed to expand. In combat we use both strong and weak points of each side, as well as spells and special abilities developed during the game.
In the second part of the game we will meet again known from the prototype of Rudobrod and his gang of vigorous Vikings. Together with them we will set off on our next adventure, which will result in new friendships as well as new and joked enemies. Contrary to the first part, which the authors of the game compared to the "party at the barbecue". - This time we are facing a much more serious task of saving the world.
Of course, Swords & Soldiers II brings much improved graphics, especially when compared to the original version from the Wii console. The whole project was realized in a characteristic, incredibly colourful, comic style. There was also an original sense of humour of the authors, also visible in the storyline and sound layers. In the game there is of course a single player mode, although the essence of the game remains the rivalry of two live opponents on a split screen.

Digitally Downloaded: 3 / 5
Handholding aside, and beyond failing to offer something truly above and beyond its predecessor, the multiplayer offerings are superb, and Swords & Soldiers 2 is good, reliable fun. It won't likely be a game you'll remember a decade from now, but as a weekend buster, you could do far worse than this one.
Nintendo Life: 8 / 10 by Thomas Whitehead
Swords & Soldiers II is the sequel that the WiiWare classic truly deserves, and it represents a new-gen upgrade that shines as an example of genuine quality on the eShop. Its blend of 2D strategy remains fun and frantic, with just occasional moments where the pieces don't add up perfectly, while the whole title is polished and constructed with detail and care. With a hefty range of units and the freedom to tackle an entertaining campaign or create custom battles, it also offers plenty of premium value.
Digital Chumps: 8 / 10 by Steve Schardein
Swords and Soldiers II is a unique take on real-time strategy gameplay that permutes the established formulas equally as much as it simplifies them. The result is an accessible—yet satisfyingly challenging—game which feels just as frenzied as the typical RTS title, but which can be enjoyed in bite-sized portions.
