An independent French game development studio headquartered in Montpellier. Sandfall Interactive develops games for PCs and consoles, with its debut and breakout hit being the RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
The history of Sandfall Interactive began in 2020. The Montpellier-based studio was led by Guillaume Broche, who served as both CEO and Creative Director.
The team, composed largely of former Ubisoft employees, dove enthusiastically into their debut project. Sandfall Interactive’s debut was driven by a desire to revive the turn-based RPG genre, which the studio felt had been largely ignored by AAA developers.
The studio waited until June 2024 to officially announce the project. That’s when it was revealed that the game in question was Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which immediately impressed players with its stunning graphics, powered by the skillful use of Unreal Engine 5. The game also stood out for its combat, which blended a turn-based system with real-time elements, notably through quick-time event sequences.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 launched on April 24, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game was available on Game Pass from day one, yet that didn’t stop it from becoming a major commercial success. The first million copies of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sold in just three days, with the Steam player count peaking at 145,000 around launch.
These impressive sales were matched by equally strong reviews. The game earned “very positive” reviews on Steam, scored between 90 and 93/100 on Metacritic depending on the platform, and achieved a record-breaking player rating of 9.7/10. This achievement made Sandfall Interactive’s game the highest-rated title in Metacritic history. Interestingly, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 even earned praise from the President of France, Emmanuel Macron.
