Folk Tale is a strategy game with a lot of focus on economic aspects; the title is the debut production of the Games Foundry studio.
The action of Folk Tale takes place in a fantasy land and the authors have put a lot of effort towards filling their game with large doses of humor. We play the role of a sovereign, it is our primary ambition to lead our dim-witted mob of subordinates to glory and prosperity; however, since the world of Folk Tale is filled with various dangers, this will prove to be a difficult task. Amongst the direct threats to our nation we will find: the slave trader Urzal, a goblin crime organization and multiple bands of monks who have mastered both the martial arts and the ability to transform into shaggy beasts. The single player campaign has been split into two separate stories, which combined, offer around forty hours of fun; they were also designed to familiarize the players with the game mechanics and prepare them for the individual challenges of the sandbox mode, as well as the skirmishes against other users in the multiplayer.
Folk Tale offers real-time gameplay and strongly resembles The Settlers series. To accomplish our main task of granting our subjects the prosperity and well-developed society they desire, we need to create a booming economy, gather resources, build villages and constantly fill our treasury with gold; we will also face various risks along the way, such as dangerous expeditions to icebound lands, active volcanos or mysterious swamps. Apart from the traditional RTS camera we can switch to a FPP view at any moment and take a closer look at our empire. Our subordinates start out as exceptionally lobotomized individuals; however, given time and enough effort, they will gradually transform into worthy, self-aware and intelligent human beings. Folk Tale offers player a lot of freedom; when it comes to achieving victory, developing your country through technological and economic advancements is just as good of a way to achieve success as assembling a huge military; the game is further diversified by the religion system, which allows for prayer to one of the gods, who can either directly help us or cause harm to our rivals.
