Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China Description
Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China for XONE and PC is a World War II arcade flight simulator set in Southeastern Asia. The game was created by Ace Maddox – an independent Swedish studio which specializes in development of simulators.
Plot
In Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China for XONE and PC, the plot is based on historical events and the game tells a story of a secret combat squad consisting of volunteers called Flying Tigers. Their task was to help China against the aggressive Japan. The idea behind creating the group was initiated at the end of 1940, by Claire Chennault – a retired American Air Force major. Curiously enough, before leaving the force, he worked as an aviation advisor for Chiang Kai-shek - a Chinese leader.
In Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China for XONE and PC, the story-based campaign comprises all the most important events the famous combat squad participated in, such as dogfights, bombings and reconnaissance missions (both at night and in daylight). These include the first air battle of the Flying Tigers over the Chinese Kunming, Japanese attacks on Rangoon in the winter of 1941, the battle of the Salween gorge, escort missions in the Himalayas, the invasion of the Malay peninsula and Burma being conquered by the Japanese.
Mechanics
The game offers arcade flight physics, placing a special emphasis on spectacular plane acrobatics and shooting in the unique TrazerTime mode, which slows down the passage of time. The game bears a resemblance to the popular arcade simulators having their roots on consoles, such as Ace Combat: Assault Horizon.
Game modes
Apart from the single-player campaign, the game features several multiplayer modes, such as Team Dogfight, Master of the Skies or Capture the Flag. Up to sixteen players can meet in a multiplayer session.
Technical aspects
Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China stands out with great, high-definition visuals, and a peculiar menu resembling a comic strip. The exotic, Far-East locations were faithfully recreated in the game. These include countries such as China, Burma or Thailand, as well as different places, such the Malay peninsula, the Himalayas, or the Indian Ocean. Furthermore, a variety of fighter planes belonging to the American, British and Japanese air forces have their in-game representations as well. Additionally, the game features changing weather conditions, which has its influence on the virtual battles.
