Plot

Flat Kingdom Paper’s Cut Edition takes players to the titular “flat kingdom” where people have lived in happiness and wealth for centuries. However, peace is over, as Hex – a three-dimensional thief - is back. Not only did he steal six Magical Jewels that kept the flat world away from the third dimension but, to make matters worse, he also kidnapped the successor to the throne. The main protagonist named Flat decided to set on a dangerous journey in order to save the missing princess. The plot unfolds mostly in the form of cut-scenes, yet the player also learns about the universe’s history through gameplay and discovering ancient scrolls.

Mechanics

Flat Kingdom Paper’s Cut Edition is a 2D platformer with side-view. What makes the gameplay interesting is the set of skills the hero has – Flat can change shapes and become, according to the circumstances, a square, triangle, or circle. Therefore, gameplay involves not only jumping on platforms, but also solving simple environment puzzles. Moreover, similarly to Metroidvania titles, with the progress, the hero unlocks entrances to locations unavailable before.

Combat is the key-element of gameplay. No matter if you face standard opponents or heavily armed bosses, fights come down to making use of Flat’s unique abilities which involve transforming into a shape that can hurt the given enemy. Following the rock-paper-scissors rules, triangles beat circles, squares crush triangles, and circles destroy squares. Interestingly, apart from the main plot, the title features loads of side-quests and an additional set of the hero’s skills.

Technical aspects

Flat Kingdom Paper’s Cut Edition published on PC is a title of high quality. Fine, cartoon graphics are accompanied by an amazing soundtrack composed by Manami Matsumae – the author of soundtracks for such games as Shovel Knight and the Mega Man series.
