Firewall Ultra is the second installment in a series of tactical shooters by an American studio First Contact Entertainment, originating from 2018. Just like the first game, it was developed for virtual reality sets.
Plot
The story of Firewall Ultra is secondary compared to gameplay. We play as elite mercenaries specializing in espionage, carrying out missions to protect secret data from enemy forces or stealing the enemies' intel by eliminating its defenders.
Mechanics
Firewall Ultra is a first-person shooter. The game's built around missions, requiring reflexes, perceptiveness and tactical sense. Completing quests grants reputation, used to unlock and modify equipment.
Available gear is very diverse, ranging from firearms intended for encounters at different distances and various gadgets - flashlights, distorting devices, proximity mines and door blockades. There are also many combat skills to use on the battlefield.
We'll spend our moments of downtime between missions in the lobby, where we can talk to other players or practice at the shooting range.
Game modes
Ultra Firewall was primarily designed with multiplayer in mind. It offers two primary game modes.
Contracts divide players into two teams of four. The first team must defend the laptop containing top secret intel. They need to fortify the computer room, block doors, set proximity mines in critical locations, cooperate and take strategic positions. The other team must gain access to the laptop and decrypt the data before time runs out, doing their best to take the defenders by surprise.
The game also features co-op, in which four players face AI-controlled opponents. This specific mode supports singleplayer as well.
Technical aspects
Firewall Ultra runs on the Unreal Engine 5 and makes good use of its capabilities. The detailed weapon models and diverse, atmospheric levels are all very appealing. The game also features realistic, dynamic lighting. It utilizes the capabilities of the PlayStation VR2 goggles and the PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers, such as eye movement tracking, haptic vibrations and adaptive triggers.
