Encodya Description
Encodya is a futuristic point-and-click adventure game inspired by Blade Runner, the Monkey Island series and the Ghibli films. It is a project of Chaosmonger Studio, a company founded at the beginning of the 21st century and specialising in documentaries, animated films and science fiction. As of 2019, the studio is also developing its own games, such as Clunky Hero and Encodya.
Plot
The protagonist of Encodya is Tina, a nine-year-old orphan living in a shelter on the roof of a skyscraper in the dark metropolis of Neo Berlin. In 2062, powerful corporations rule the city and robots are omnipresent. Tina and the large but clumsy robot SAM-53 that protects her live using the rubbish and scrap left behind by the other inhabitants.
The girl's life takes an unexpected turn after an unexpected discovery. Tina's father has left her an important mission: to complete a plan that will save the world. So the protagonist, together with her mechanical guardian, sets off on a journey that will take her through strange places full of strange robots and people.
Unlike many cyberpunk games, Encodya takes a fresh approach to the theme. The game takes obvious inspiration from Monkey Island and the works of Studio Ghibli, abandoning the typical nihilistic and hopeless atmosphere of the setting in favour of a lighter, yet moving story.
Mechanics
The Chaosmonger Studio didn't try to reinvent the wheel when they were designing the gameplay. Encodya is a classic point-and-click adventure game: gameplay is about talking to more than 34 NPCs and exploring the more than 100 available locations in search of useful items. We can combine items in our inventory to obtain a new object and "use" them on the environment or NPCs. Some of the objects that we can interact with have no practical use, but give us interesting information about the game world or provide us with one or another joke.
Encodya also includes two interesting features. Just like in the Sam & Max series, in the game we have two characters at our disposal: Tina and SAM-53. From time to time, players encounter a task that only one of them can perform, for example, talk to a character who does not like humans or robots. The second new feature is a system of randomly generated puzzles, thanks to which the game can surprise even during the next attempts.
Technical aspects
Encodya developers designed 2.5D graphics. In the game we can see both 3D objects (for example, character models) and 2D backgrounds. Developers took care of the professional soundtrack. During the game we hear professional voice actors and ambient music.
