Edge of Sanity is a horror action adventure game with survival elements. It was developed by Vixa Games, an indie Polish studio with a portfolio that includes The Crackpet Show, a game by H.P. Lovecraft.
Plot
Edge of Sanity takes us on a journey to Cold War-era Alaska. The main protagonist of the game is a member of a supply group that helped the workers of a field laboratory. One day the protagonist and his entourage discovered that something bad had happened at the facility - terrifying monsters had spread over the place, and there was no trace of the scientists. Providers immediately rushed to escape, during which the protagonist separated from the rest of the group. After setting up a makeshift camp, there was nothing left for him to do but to try to find the other survivors, as well as to find out what is really going on in the mountain valley, what fate befell the missing scientists and what the mysterious Thurul Stone has to do with it.
Game mechanics
Edge of Sanity is a side-scroller. Central to the gameplay are expeditions, during which we search primarily for food and other supplies. Gathered resources allow us not only to survive another night in the camp, but also serve us to create various items that may prove useful during subsequent expeditions.
Traversing the frosty valley, we encounter numerous cultists and dangerous monsters. We deal with opponents in a variety of ways - each of them has weak points, the discovery of which is the key to getting out of trouble unscathed. When everything else fails, we can try to defend ourselves with an axe, but this is most often akin to rushing headlong into the sun. At the same time, it should be remembered that each traumatic event leaves a permanent mark in the mind of the protagonist, which over time can begin to bring negative consequences....
However, the game is worth the candle, because in addition to useful resources, as well as valuable information, during the expeditions we find other survivors who, once they reach our camp, can be sent on exploration missions. However, we have to take care of them, because with dwindling supplies, their morale decreases, and thus their usefulness or loyalty to us.
Technical aspects
Graphics in Edge of Sanity is made in an atmospheric, cartoonish style, which evokes some associations with the Darkest Dungeon series.
