Dynamite Jack is the work of Phil Hassey and the development team at Hassey Enterprises, primarily known from the Gaclon series. The creators remained faithful to the atmosphere of science fiction, however, reaching for the genre of action games with an admixture of adventure and dexterity elements.
Dynamite Jack is set in the distant future. The title character is a cosmic commander who was captured during one of the battles and then forced into slave labour in the Anathema mine. As soon as an opportunity arises, Jack decides to flee. However, the road to freedom is fraught with dangers that need to be tackled.
The player's task is to help the heros pass through 26 underground maze-like mine levels. In most cases, it requires not only finding a way out of the board, but often also collecting appropriate items, which will allow, for example, deactivate the defense system or activate some mechanism.
During his escape, Jack mainly uses two basic items of equipment - a flashlight that illuminates the road ahead and lures enemies, and explosives. The latter are used both to eliminate enemies and to track passages.
The game offers a simple but aesthetically pleasing visual setting. Two-dimensional graphics with a top-down view brings to mind associations with classic arcade books from the era of 8 and 16-bit computers. Sound effects in Dynamite Jack were recorded using professional SoundSnap samples.
