Dwerve is a dynamic game with RPG and tower defense elements, in which we control a dwarf mechanic who sets off into the depths of dwarven ruins equipped with automatic turrets and traps to protect his people from the attack of trolls sent by a wicked witch. The game was developed and published by indie Half Human Games studio.
Plot
The story in Dwerve tells about a dwarven race that long ago settled the inside of Crowncrest Mountain. Digging through its soil, the dwarves discovered power stones and used them to power machines and the entire city. And although they lived in prosperity for several centuries, greed and lust for even more stones led them to dig into territory inhabited by a murderous horde of trolls, the Gloomdark. Their fate seemed sealed, but thanks to the trolls' innate weakness - sensitivity to the sun's rays, which transformed them into stone - the dwarves were able to peacefully evacuate from the inside of the mountain and settle on the surface. There, over the centuries, they have forgotten their knowledge and values, until a new threat arrives in the form of the Witch Queen Vandra and her army of trolls. Their only hope are the lost technologies abandoned in the old settlement, which the protagonist sets out to find despite the dangers lurking there.
Mechanics
Dwerve features a story campaign with different endings, in which we explore the interior of the mountain, divided into biomes, where, apart from environmental obstacles, such as lava, we encounter a lot of enemies. The hero can both directly attack enemies with his melee weapon and deploy various types of turrets and traps. There are so many enemies that without proper positioning of turrets, the hero won't be able to defeat all of them alone, so during the game, in addition to reflexes and dexterity, strategic planning of their placement is necessary.
As time goes by, the enemies get stronger and there are even more of them. Fortunately, our hero also grows stronger with time, mainly thanks to the artifacts found, among which you can find a shield that blocks bullets, a hammer that makes the ground shake or a boomerang that attacks several enemies at once. There's also a varied turret arsenal featuring several development trees for each of the new inventions.
Technical aspects
Dwerve is a top-down 2D pixel art game with a focus on dynamic underworld lighting.
