Drox Operative 2

Drox Operative 2 is a continuation of an unusual RPG from 2012. Sequel was developed in the independent studio Soldak Entertainment, which also created the previous instalment of the series.

Plot

In Drox Operative 2 we return to the cosmic universe, once ruled by the powerful Drox race. For 100,000 years, it has ruled the galaxy by means of the Operatives - elite crews of ships able to execute any command. The power of the captains of these units was so great that it began to cause concern in the Droxachs themselves, who decided to murder all the Operatives. But their plan failed, and the war that followed led to the destruction of this ancient race.

However, the universe did not stand still and even the return of the Ancients did not disrupt the welfare of other races, both old and those created by the milieu after the fall of the Droxes. Only the Operatives Guild hasn't changed, although its members have turned into de facto independent mercenaries, undertaking any mission in exchange for generous payment. One of these captains is a player.

Mechanics

Just like the first part of the cycle, Drox Operative 2 is an unusual mix of sandbox action RPG with 4X strategy. We are directing a single ship and exploring a galaxy (shown in the isometric view) full of planets, anomalies and other interesting places. The universe of the game is generated randomly each time a game is played, and its shape is influenced by the player's decisions. These include interactions with races living in space, from which we receive various tasks, but we can also trade with aliens, spy on them, declare war on them, etc. In this way, we gain credits, which we spend on improving the ship to better cope with arcade clashes. It is also necessary to recruit new crew members who have a significant impact on the functioning of our unit.

Drox Operative 2 does not change this scheme, but there were some modifications. The devs have significantly expanded the options associated with diplomacy, adding the ability to create federations and protectorates, a vassal system and much more. There were also more interesting places of interest, as well as randomly generated fourth generation races. We can protect or exploit more primitive residents if we have a whim. Thanks to this, the game universe is even more dynamic and unpredictable than in the one.

Soldak Entertainment team has also improved combat and movement systems, resulting in significantly faster gameplay than the first Drox Operative. In addition, new components for the ship have been added, including plasma armament and elements allowing to batter enemy units.

Game modes

In Drox Operartive 2, the ability to play in cooperation mode over the Internet or the local network returns, but nothing stands in the way of exploring the galaxy alone.

Technical aspects

One of the significant novelties in Drox Operative 2 is the refreshed audiovisual setting. The devs improved the appearance of the maps and added a higher quality of texture, which makes it look much better than the first part of the cycle.
