The main aspect of gameplay in Between the Stars is the exploration of procedurally generated space and completing missions assigned by the command. Battles are fought in real time. Before starting a battle, players must select one of the available of captains. Each of them has his own set of skills, which influence the fight. It is also important that the death of commanders is permanent. If he dies in combat, he is replaced by another character with different abilities.

The chances of victory in battles with the opponent is also influenced by the chosen ship. With the progress of the game, the players get access to the next ships. Each one of them features different properties and special attacks. After a victory, the player earns experience that can be used to improve the ship and its captain. In this way, vessels can be further improved and their combat efficiency increased.

Taking care of one's subordinates is also a very important part of the game. Each ship must have a sufficient number of crew members. If someone dies in combat, players need to hire someone to replace them. Maintaining the proper functioning of the ship also requires taking care of the morale and safety of one's team.
