Digimon Links is another mobile entry in the Digimon franchise. The franchise was created in Japan during the second half of 1990s. The new game combines features of arena battle game, farm simulator and classic Tamagotchi, and it was developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The published released the title as a free-to-play game with microtransactions. It is available, among other platforms, on AND and iOS. The title was released as a cerebration of twentieth anniversary of Digimon franchise.
Plot
The game takes place in a virtual reality that can be accessed only through a special app. The place is inhabited by digital monsters called Digimons. Due to a glitch, this unique world was partially defragmented and split into single structures. The player and others like him or her are tasked with fixing the situation and returning Digital World to its former state.
Mechanics
The gameplay in Digimon Links for AND and iOS is played on two planes. The first one is the farm, player’s main headquarters. There the player can unlock new Digimons and train the ones he or she already possess. For the development to go properly, one must take care of the basic needs of the creatures. The Digimons are gaining experience, reaching new experience levels, obtaining new skills and evolving into new, more powerful forms.
Trained Digimons participate in 3 on 3 battles. The fights are turn-based. Player can use basic attacks of monsters and their unlocked special skills. During the fights the Digimons are gaining experience and their trainer gains Link Points, items useful in the training process. By using these points it is possible to gain new creatures. The player can also gain DigiStones, special crystals that speed up the evolution process.
Game modes
Digimon Links for AND and iOS can be played in the main campaign, during which the player tries to discover what the source of the defragmentation of Digital World is. At the same time, he or she is attempting to rebuild the world. It can be done alone – by training the creatures and making them fight in battles, usually related to the main plot. The game also features an online multiplayer mode where three players can cooperate by joining their forces and fighting the hardest battles with their strongest Digimons.
Technical aspects
Digimon Links for AND and iOS looks well both during fights and while developing the farm. In first case the action is presented in three-dimensions with cel-shading technology accompanied by various lighting effects. The farm is observed and improved in isometric perspective that suits it well. The gameplay is accompanied by a licensed soundtrack that features music from the anime and first cinematic animated Digimon movies.
