Death Gate is another production of Legend Entertainment studio known for its numerous adaptations of popular literature. This time the artists decided to take on wallpaper a seven-volume fantasy series by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Although the action of the title was placed in the book universe, we are dealing with a separate story. The whole gameplay was shown from the first-person perspective. We move in a leap between locations like in the old RPG productions. At the bottom of the screen there is an inventory bar. On the left side there is a handy list of possible actions and a kind of compass.

Two thousand years ago, two races of sorcerers played a key role in the Death Gate universe: Sartan and Patryn. The first of them tried to live in harmony with others, to respect the moral principles in force and to care for peace in the world. Their competitors preferred a completely different attitude. The most important thing for them was their own benefit and they did not worry about others, often causing them harm. In addition to these two rival nations, the world was inhabited by other races called mensch. They included people, elves and dwarves. As a result of the war, Sartans won and divided the world into five regions. Four of them, ruled by the elements of fire, water, air and earth, divided between the mensch races and each other. On the other hand, Patricians lost their punishment in the land called the Labyrinth and were sentenced to oblivion.

The main character, a young sorcerer named Haplo, belongs to the Patrines and, at the command of the mighty Xara, sets off from the Labyrinth with a mission to learn about the fate of the enemy Sartans and to find fragments of a magical seal that allows to restore the former shape of the universe. This is the beginning of an adventure in which we will travel through all five geographically and culturally diverse lands. As befits a classic adventure game, we'll spend most of our time solving puzzles and searching for items, but Death Gate has also introduced a spell casting system. As we progress, we find more and more powerful spells, but contrary to appearances, we do not use them in combat, but to solve more and more puzzles.

The graphic design of Death Gate consists to a large extent of static, drawing backgrounds. Only sometimes we observe simple animations. During the game we are accompanied by music in MIDI format adjusted to the style of fantasy.
