Deadbeat Heroes for PC and XONE is a dynamic brawler game developed by the independent Deadbeat Productions and published by Square Enix because of the Square Enix Collective – a program with which the Japanese publisher helps independent developers with releasing their games.
Plot
Deadbeat Heroes takes players to an alternate version of the 1970s' London. Superheroes who have thus far fought the criminals were defeated by much more powerful enemies, retired, or remain in hiding (the most powerful one has left the boundaries of the Solar System).
The streets of the metropolis are filled with a new generation of criminals featuring supernatural powers. Enslaved citizens decide to take the matters into their own hands and face the villains themselves. Luckily, the lack of natural superpowers is not a problem – they receive special gloves from their mentor, which allow them to take over the abilities of their opponents. With this equipment, the heroes are able to face the threat posed by The Prime Sinister and his minions.
From now on, the streets of London are overwatched by Captain Justice (a war veteran), Felix Movewright (an accountant), Felicity Swift (a teenager from a rich family), Betty Ritz (a talented singer), and Max Dan (martial artist).
Mechanics
In the PC and XONE release of Deadbeat Heroes, players observe the action from the top-down perspective. The gameplay revolves around fighting the opponents across thirty-five levels. On their adventure, players need to watch out for the aforementioned opponents as well as the plentiful traps.
Battles take place in real time. When fighting the opponents, players have to combine spectacular attack sequences, dodge enemy blows (the main protagonists can e.g. run on the walls), and skillfully utilize the powers taken over from the opponents with the aforementioned gloves. Players get at their disposal ten such abilities, the most prominent of which are freeing enemies, invisibility, and rocket fist attacks worthy of Superman himself.
Game modes
Deadbeat Heroes offers both single player and local cooperative modes (the latter one for up to two players). The game fully supports Twitch allowing players to stream their playthroughs and interact with their viewers with no problems.
Technical aspects
Deadbeat Heroes for PC and XONE delivers pleasing to one's eye visuals based on the cell-shading technology, making the entire experience seem like an animated movie from the 1970s. The game features also the atmospheric soundtrack written by Pitstop Productions.
