Dead in Vinland is a survival strategy with RPG features. It is a sort of continuation of 2015’s Dead in Bermuda and has been developed by the same CCCP studio.
Plot
The game tells a story of a Viking named Eirik, whose family gets chased out of the village and runs to the sea. Then their ship gets caught in a storm and wrecks on an unknown island, which turns out be very unfriendly and harsh place, at which every day is a fight for survival.
As we try to help them, we discover that there are other people living here, who can become our allies or foes. In addition to pure survival, Dead in Vinland’s storyline revolves around discovering the island’s secrets.
Game mechanics
Dead in Vinland is a turn-based strategy focused on managing a group of survivors, with every character having unique personality and skills. We start with a handful of people, but we can recruit more from other people living on the island. All characters can form various relationships with each other, both positive (including romances) and negative, and it is our task to maintain their unity.
Dead in Vinland offers complex survival mechanics. Players must gather resources, food and water while also fighting against with forces of nature and keeping our population healthy, both physically and mentally. Each character is described by various numeral parameters that we can develop. Adding new posts at our camp is also important, unlocking new options and mechanics, as is the crafting system.
The gameplay is highly nonlinear. That’s because how the game turns out depends on our actions and moral decisions in every mission, and there are 70 of them, each with various endings. Add to it 150 locations on the island, filled with adventures, threats and precious items. However, nature isn’t the only danger here, as the island is inhabited by the band of a Viking known as Björn Headcleaver. We can either become his vassals and regularly pay him a tribute or try to defy him. The latter will require fighting against him in turn-based battles between two groups of three Vikings.
Technical aspects
Dead in Vinland uses good-looking two-dimensional visuals in comic style.
