Something is consuming our universe, a vast and ancient force almost beyond our comprehension. Millions of years ago, the minions of that power found their way to the 3rd planet of an unremarkable yellow star. Ours. The race they created came to call their masters The Watchers. For millennia we knew them as gods and served their dark purposes, but a few humans developed extraordinary powers. They were known as the Adepts and they rose up, banishing The Watchers into a parallel universe, where they've manipulated and schemed from afar. Until now.

The main pros of the game

  • Jetpack Mechanics: Many players enjoyed the jetpack combat, which offers a unique aerial combat experience and vertical gameplay. The ability to fly and hover adds a fresh dynamic to the typical third-person shooter format.
  • Graphics and Atmosphere: The game features decent graphics for its time, with colorful environments and engaging level designs that enhance the overall experience.
  • Engaging Combat: The blend of ground-based shooting and aerial dogfights was often highlighted as a fun aspect, with some players appreciating the mix of cover-based shooting mechanics.
  • Nostalgic Appeal: Some reviews noted that the game has a certain charm and nostalgia, especially for fans of older action games and those who appreciate its B-movie style storyline.

The main cons of the game

  • Technical Issues: Many users reported problems with activation due to SecuROM DRM, leading to frustration. There were also crashes during cutscenes and other gameplay segments, especially on modern systems.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: Several reviews mentioned that the game becomes repetitive, with similar enemy encounters and a lack of variety in mission objectives. The ground combat was often described as bland and uninspired.
  • Weak Story and Character Development: The plot was criticized for being generic and poorly executed, with many players feeling that it lacked depth and coherence. The ending was particularly noted as abrupt and unsatisfying.
  • Clunky Controls: While some players enjoyed the controls, others found them frustrating, especially when using a mouse and keyboard for flying. The game was said to be more suited for controller use.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Variety in Gameplay: Users expressed a desire for more diverse gameplay elements and mechanics, particularly in terms of enemy types and mission structures. The game was seen as lacking in innovation beyond its jetpack feature.
  • Expanded Storytelling: Many players felt the game could benefit from deeper character development and a more coherent narrative, as well as better integration of its various story elements.
  • Improved Instructions and Tutorials: Some players noted that the lack of clear instructions for certain mechanics, such as hijacking enemy aircraft, could lead to confusion and hinder the overall experience.

Summary

  • Overall, while Dark Void has its share of fans who appreciate its unique mechanics and nostalgic value, it also suffers from significant technical issues and repetitive gameplay that detracts from its potential as a standout title. Players looking for a fun, albeit flawed, experience may find enjoyment in it, especially at a low price point.
