Crowsworn is an action platform metroidvania type game. It draws not only from the classics of the genre, but also from games such as Bloodborne or the Devil May Cry series. The project, which is created by an independent studio Mongoose Rodeo, was developed thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.

Plot

Crowsworn takes us on a journey to a gloomy fantasy world, to be precise - to the Fearanndal. This once great kingdom is under a curse, as a result of which its lands were deserted and monsters took the place of their former inhabitants. During the game we take the role of a hero, who woke up in his grave. Deprived of memory protagonist decides to move forward, not knowing yet, that in this way he enters a path on which he will find answers to his questions, discover the secrets of Fearanndal and above all - try to lift the curse on these lands.

Mechanics

In Crowsworn we observe the action from the side. In the course of the game we move through diverse, but equally gloomy locations, among which we can find the streets of a ruined town, gloomy gothic buildings or gloomy dungeons. Each level is expansive and interconnected, creating something of a vast labyrinth. The driving force behind the game are the quests pushing the story forward. Apart from them, a number of side quests await you, commissioned by friendly neutral characters. They can also supply us with useful items, which we buy for the shards gained on the way.

Exploration of the game world requires jumping on platforms and facing numerous enemies. On our way there are over 120 types of regular opponents. In addition, there are 30 powerful bosses to defeat. During the dynamic battles we have to show dexterity and reflexes (to dodge in time and make quick counterattacks), as well as skillfully use weapons at the disposal of the hero. His primary weapon is a scythe, which is perfect for close-range combat. Apart from that, the protagonist has pistols that allow him to attack enemies from a safe distance and has so-called Corvian powers. We're talking about black magic, which he can use in combat in a variety of ways, hitting enemies with accurate projectiles or area attacks. To cast spells hero needs the Malice, which he gets by hurting adversaries with a scythe.

As we progress we develop our hero. With the help of runes (spirit, blood and flesh) placed in special slots, we increase the combat potential of our weapons and provide ourselves with element-based bonuses to our attacks. In addition, there are fragments of stars waiting to be obtained, providing us with new skills or modifying the ones we already have.

Technical aspects

2D graphic design of Crowsworn is kept in cartoonish, but at the same time dark style. The game takes place to the accompaniment of atmospheric soundtrack, signed by J.J. Ipsen.
