In Crisis on the Planet of the Apes, the players assume the role of one of the intelligent Apes, known as Specimen 139, and are faced with the objective to escape the research facility to join the tribe led by Caesar, the leader of the rebellion known from the movies.

Plot

The action of Crisis on the Planet of the Apes is set between the events shown in the movies Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Five years after the epidemic that killed three billion people, an intelligent primate known as Specimen 139 is captured by the military and transported to a research facility located in California. Players become the said Specimen and are faced with the task of escaping the facility and joining the tribe led by Caesar known from the movies. Luckily, the main protagonist is not alone – he can count on the help of other intelligent apes – Bone and Spear.

Mechanics

In Crisis on the Planet of the Apes, players observe the action from the first person perspective (FPP). During the game, one mostly explores the locations and fights multiple opponents. Specimen 139 is not unarmed, as he makes perfect use of his own fists and the weapons found along the way.

The game utilizes both the headgear (that players use to freely look around the in-game environment) and dedicated motion controllers that allow players to pick up items and aim with a firearm, but also hide behind covers, climb elements of the environment and move around the locations. The developers have prepared an original controls system, in which player has to move their shoulders to reflect the way apes walk. In order to increase the immersion, developers have limited the elements of the interface to a minimum.

Technical aspects

Crisis on the Planet of the Apes features decent visuals, considering the fact that the game was developed for VR headgear. In order to play, one has to have both the headgear and dedicated motion controllers.
