City Island, released on AND and iOS, is an economic game inspired by the cult SimCity series, belonging to the popular genre of city builders. The title is the responsibility of a small Dutch studio, the Sparkling Society.
Mechanics
In City Island, our task is to expand the town on the island, and the whole game is governed by a relatively simple economy. By building and improving diverse residential buildings (from small single-family houses to huge skyscrapers), we ensure the inflow of residents. On the other hand, we have to make sure that each of them can find a job in our city. We can do that by placing more commercial buildings - from farms or small shops to oil rigs and luxury hotels. The key to success is to ensure the right balance between the number of inhabitants and the number of vacancies. The satisfaction of our citizens, which we can take care of by building various decorations, parks or public utility buildings, is also important.
Technical aspects
The graphics in City Island are at a good level, visually reminiscent of SimCity 4 released on PC by Maxis studio in 2003. We have access to nearly a hundred buildings, and we gain access to more buildings by increasing experience and player level. In addition to the standard structures, we can also construct a variety of special buildings, which can be purchased using the premium currency. The title uses the popular free-to-play model, but possible microtransactions are purely optional.
