Chicory: A Colorful Tale Description
Chicory: A Colorful Tale is an adventure game enriched with metroidvania elements. The title was developed by independent studio Dumb and Fat Games, founded by Greg Lobanov, whose portfolio includes the warmly-receive Wandersong. Thisgame was created, among other things, thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
Plot
Chicory: A Colorful Tale takes us on a trip to Picnic Province - a fantastic land inhabited exclusively by animals bearing names borrowed from food names. When a hare artist named Chicory, who made sure that the place was a feast of colors, goes missing without a trace, her biggest fan, a dog named Pizza, embarks on a search. In addition to his sympathy for her, the protagonist has another reason to do so; on the outskirts of Picnic Prowince a dark forest appeared, which absorbed all the colors and caused many problems for its inhabitants. So there's nothing left for our protege but grab to Chicory's magic brush and try to restore the old order, while trying to find his idol.
Mechanics
In Chicory: A Colorful Tale the action was shown from bird's eye view. The main element of the game are tasks commissioned by the inhabitants of the picturesque Picnic Province. While some missions push the storyline forward, others are completely optional, although we get useful rewards for completing them. The game world consists of both idyllic open areas and several towns.
During the game we constantly rely on Chicory's magic brush. With its help, we not only restore the land to its former colors, but also solve environmental puzzles, so we can get to places that are inaccessible in other ways. However, we don't immediately get access to all the brush's capabilities; most of its powers need to be unlocked by finding appropriate enhancements, the first of which is the fluorescent paint indispensable when travelling through dark tunnels. Moreover, the styles that give our paintings the desired shape and influence the structure of paint are waiting to be found. This is complemented by carefully hidden clothes for the protagonist, as well as furniture and plants, which we can then decorate his house and garden with.
All this makes it worthwhile to look into every corner, and from time to time to return to already visited locations to investigate their previously missed secrets.
Game modes
Chicory: A Colorful Tale can be played solo or in local multiplayer mode.
Technical aspects
Chicory: A Colorful Tale features hand-drawn 2D graphics. The game is accompanied by a soundtrack composed by Lena Raine - author of music for Celeste and Guild Wars 2, among others.
