The first installment of the famous series to be published on PS1. The title does not bring a revolution in the known mechanics, enabling one or more people to fight in arcade battles on bombs on special boards.
Story
Centuries ago, the ancient inhabitants of the Bomberman world closed the four evil Dark Force Bombers in the blue crystal. One day the villains are released by the wicked Burglar, who together with them conquers four lands. The brave Bomberman sets out to rescue his friends.
Mechanics
Bomberman World is based on the tried and tested mechanics used in the series that have been known to fans for years. The camera presents the action in an isometric projection, showing the whole arena or a significant part of it. The players are supposed to place bombs in such a way to eliminate all opponents on the board. The fun is enriched by power-ups lying here and there, giving us short access to special skills. The devs have placed unique elements, such as teleports or hanging platforms, which open up additional possibilities for the players.
Game modes
The main mode enables us to learn the history of Bomberman's battle against the sinister Burgler and his henchmen. There are four different worlds waiting for the players, each in a different style and containing unique elements. The strength of the game, however, is, first of all, an extensive multiplayer mode. Up to five people can compete on one screen, who can fight against each other or in teams, as well as compete in different challenges. The devs have enabled them to fight according to traditional rules as well as use power-ups and test their skills in characteristic competitions, such as collecting items on time or killing as many enemies as possible with a single bomb.
Technical aspects
Bomberman World is maintained in the cartoonish style characteristic of the series. Compared to 2D installments, the games for PS1 is characterized by lower pace of the battles due to slower character movement. The title uses a dedicated multitap, enabling up to five people to have fun at the same time.
