Blood of Steel is a MOBA with strategic elements and a style reminiscent of Japanese games like Final Fantasy. The gameplay in this game is about fighting with other players or AI in several game modes, as a squad leader modelled on a historical character. The game formula is resembling a bit Conqueror's Blade. The Chinese studio YC Games is responsible for developing the game.
Mechanics
In Blood of Steel, we play the role of one of several dozen commanders modelled on historical figures. Depending on the chosen game mode, the game is ruled by different principles. The most basic one, the Legion War, is to fight a battle by several players divided into two teams. Each of them is in charge of his squad (these are divided into short-range and distance infantry and cavalry), with different behaviour and equipment depending on the leader the player chooses before the round. For example, when we decide to take on the role of Julius Caesar, we will command an infantry equipped with equipment typical of Roman legionaries. Then we must eliminate the enemy's heroes or score more points than the enemy before the battle time is up. We get them both for the kills and for taking over checkpoints scattered around the map. We command our troops by choosing one of several orders: following the hero, attacking, withdrawing and reaching the designated point.
In addition, it is also possible to fight 1-on-1 battles without the support of auxiliary troops, take part in territorial battles, experiment with mechanics in an arcade mode, and if we do not feel up to the strength to fight other players, we can take part in training or clash with artificial intelligence.
The combat in the game is very similar to Mount & Blade, mixed with typical MOBA active skills. There are four zones that we can attack or where we defy the enemy's attacks. The range of attacks itself is very wide and includes heavy and light blows, a break in the throat, an attack from a charge or a combo. Each of the heroes also has special abilities, concerning both their actions (javelin throwing, blocking arrows, etc.) and the actions of their troop (formations). During the fight, we can support each other with healing or skills-enhancing items.
The terrain and the weather are important factors that we must take into account. Archers in the forest will be less effective than in the open air, and the cavalry will not be able to exploit the potential of the charge when going uphill. In turn, rain or fog affect visibility, which makes it difficult to plan actions.
After each match we receive experience points, and the amount of them depends on the opponents we kill and whether we won the round or lost. The levels are used to unlock new content: game modes, characters, equipment or maps.
Game modes
Blood of Steel gameplay is entirely oriented towards multiplayer battles. The modes that allow you to play alone are sideways and are used to polish your skills, but not to make any real progress in terms of ranking or heroes development.
Technical aspects
The game does not stand out in terms of its graphic design. It is on the appropriate level, typical for multiplayer games with battles involving many NPCs on the screen. Noteworthy is the diversity in design of the heroes and units, which are divided into about 50 types.
