Blast Radius is an arcade space shooter, in which we take on the role of a space ship and take part in a number of missions against enemy forces. The title is considered to be a spin-off of another series developed by Psygnosis, Colony Wars, but offering much simpler battle mechanics and focuses primarily on fun and cinematic action.
Story
Kayne is the last member of the recently destroyed Wolf Squadron. The excellent pilot is asked for the help of the Vorn race, which needs support in the fight against aggressive representatives of the Kotan-Kai nation. Kanye receives a ship equipped with modern technology and the latest weaponry and sets off on a mission to defeat the space tyrants.
Mechanics
Blast Radius enables us to steer nine types of vehicles and test our combat skills in more than thirty missions. As part of subsequent tasks, the players must eliminate or protect the indicated objectives. Points are awarded for successfully completing tasks and destroying as many enemy ships as possible, which we can then be redistributed for vehicle upgrades, including stronger shields and weapons.
Game modes
In addition to the basic campaign mode, in which the story of pilot Kayne is presented, the creators from Psygnosis also made it possible for two players to have fun by connecting their consoles via a cable. However, this kind of fun requires two copies of the game and separate devices. Fans of cosmic battles can play in cooperation and complete successive missions together or compete in a typical deathmatch.
Technical aspects
Blast Radius uses the graphics engine created for the Colony Wars series. The game distinguishes itself from the former series by a bit more colorful stylistics, noticeable for example in ship designs and paint jobs. During the missions, players are accompanied by rock and techno songs encouraging them to fight.
