Biomorph

Biomorph is an action game belonging to the metroidvania subgenre, which was created in the form of a 2D platformer. It is the work of the Canadian Lucid Dreams Studio, known for Legends of Ethernal released in 2020.

Plot

In Biomorph the player takes on the role of a creature resembling an anthropomorphic cat with large ears. We end up in the world of Ilios, divided into diverse regions, full of bizarre characters, creatures, and remnants of a fallen civilization. The protagonist traverses it, uncovering the secrets of the past, as well as rebuilding the city of Blightmoor, which thanks to our efforts becomes a home for an increasing number of creatures. By gaining knowledge about the history of Ilios, the hero discovers their own history, recovering memories that they initially did not remember.

Gameplay

Biomorph's protagonist has a unique ability that allows them to take the shape of defeated enemies and use their powers. It uses them both when fighting other monsters and to solve various puzzles. Interestingly, every creature whose form we stole gradually evolves, gaining new powerful abilities. This makes subsequent encounters with it increasingly challenging.

Remaining in their own body, the hero is not defenseless. In the game we can acquire and then upgrade many weapons. Each weapon has its own power-up tree - they're used for both close and long-range combat. Additionally, as we make progress, we unlock a range of unique abilities of the protagonist. Their effectiveness can be increased by advancing to higher character levels and receiving the needed skill points.

Thanks to all these elements, we can adjust the combat style to our own preferences. This is crucial, because in addition to fights with "ordinary" opponents, Biomoprh also features fights with powerful bosses.

An essential element of the game - apart from combat and exploration - are interactions with non-player characters. Not only do they allow us to learn parts of the plot, but they also provide a chance to get more or less complicated and non-obvious quests. Therefore, it is worth making an effort to have as many NPCs as possible live in the aforementioned town of Blightmoor. The appearance of the buildings in the city can be changed, making them more "our own".

Technical aspects

The action in Biomoprh is shown from the side. The game world was hand-drawn and is kept in a dark style.
