Beneath is a shooter game with survival horror elements, set in the ocean depths and inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's works. The game was developed by Camel 101 studio, which has titles such as Syndrome and Those Who Remain in its portfolio.
Gameplay
In Beneath we watch the action from a first-person perspective (FPP).
Opponents, combat and arsenal
We explore an underwater complex during the game and face the horrors lurking there. We encounter both aggressive people and monsters straight from Cthulhu mythology. The protagonist fights enemies, using melee weapons (crowbar) and firearms (assault rifle, shotgun). Individual weapons can be modified, improving their elements and adapting them to individual preferences.
The game allows us to throw ourselves at enemies with a battle cry on our lips, but it is not necessarily the best solution, as ammunition is a scarce commodity here. For this reason, a more sensible way to deal with enemies is often to sneak in the shadows and behind their backs, and to eliminate them by surprise.
Underwater depths and mental health
From time to time, the game also allows us to put on a deep-sea diving suit and venture into the oceanic abyss. We must pay attention to the oxygen indicator during those sequences. We can also take the helm of a bathyscaphe capable of covering greater distances underwater.
Protagonist's mental health plays an important role in the game, as it is affected by everything he has to face.
Story
The main character of Beneath is a deep-sea diver Noah Quinn, who goes on a routine mission to one of the underwater facilities at the bottom of the Atlantic. Upon arrival, it turns out that an ancient evil lurks there, which he must confront.
Not only the life of Quinn's daughter is in his hands, but also the fate of all humanity. The protagonist must be careful not to be driven to madness by the horrors he needs to face.
